1 янв 2016 г. - Mick Gordon and the DOOM Machine

Описание:

Mick Gordon's work on the DOOM 2016 soundtrack, a new addition to the DOOM video game franchise, represents one of the most recent milestones in pushing the absolute limits of electronic music. When talking about how he was tasked with creating the DOOM 2016 music, he says that he received a brief saying that he needed to create music that would be something no one has ever heard before, needed to make it instantly win the love of millions of listeners, and he was not allowed to use guitars. If you listen to the E1M1 track on the previous DOOM point of this timeline, you will find that guitars are one of the main voices that defines the classic DOOM sound. To confront this challenge, Mick Gordon decided that he needed to change the process he used to change the outcome of the music he made. It was here that Mick Gordon created a series of sound pedals, amplifiers, distortion pedals, and microphones that connected his Moog styled synthesizer to a modern equalizer station and music composition software, which fans would lovingly call the DOOM Machine. Mick Gordon created a new kind of electronic instrument that sent a simple sound wave input through a complex series of electronic sound modifiers to create extremely distorted, yet groovy synthesized sounds. His work on DOOM 2016 did not stop with just creating a new instrument that tested electronic music boundaries, but he continued to push the envelope by smearing the lines between sounds from real life and synthetic sounds. Mick Gordon found a way to sneak guitars into DOOM by using a specialized system of pedals and software that was capable of blending a guitar with other sounds like the whirring of a chainsaw. These methods were unheard and seemed absolutely nonsensical when isolated, but Mick Gordon had managed to create something that fans struggled to define with the current list of musical genres. Fans came to not only call the DOOM 2016 soundtrack the first work of the new genre called Argent Metal, a hybrid of realistic Metal music sounds and otherwordly distorted synthetic sounds, but would also label the DOOM Machine as a genre defining instrument. Mick Gordon's DOOM Machine had the same effect on Argent Metal that the electric guitar had Rock and Roll. I believe that Mick Gordon's work here to be one of the most interesting examples of how far electronic music has come since the days of Space Invaders and still has an undeterminable amount of potential for reshaping the way music is created in the future.
