Frequency Modulation, or FM, Synthesis was the scientific concept that drove the development of electronic instruments. Developed by Robert Chowning during the 1960s, the algorithm for FM Synthesis was sold to Yamaha in 1973. The underlying principle of the concept is that modulating the frequency of an existing sound wave can instead create a new sound wave with different sonic properties from the original. This allowed musicians to create both harmonic and inharmonic sounds of which the latter was difficult to achieve with nonelectronic means. As digital synthesizing became more popular, artists began to create more complex soundscapes that would later define electronic music as a genre.
