The Space Invaders arcade station was released in arcades in 1978 and it single handedly changed the trajectory of video game music history. Space Invaders arrived at a time in which video games had stagnated both in originality and innovation. Its entertainingly simple concept of shooting down alien aircrafts breathed fresh air into the video game world, but it was also the first game to ever include a looping soundtrack that reacted to events within the game. At this point in time, computers only had 8 channels, which essentially meant only 8 sounds could happen at any one time. Despite this limitation, Space Invaders cleverly created a soundtrack using only 4 electronically creating Chiptune notes that repeated over and over again. But hearing the same 4 notes over and over would get boring for the player, so the developers created a clever program within the game that sped up the music as the aliens came closer and closer to the player. With only 4 notes, Space Invaders created a simple yet effective electronic soundtrack that served to fill the silence when the player was doing well and increased the tension by speeding up as the player came closer and closer to losing. The soundtrack of Space Invaders represents the first true showing of the unique atmosphere and impact that electronic music could create.
