Kennedy discovered that the Soviets were supplying the Cubans with missiles powerful enough to reach Washington D.C. In response, the US issued a blockade against Cuba. American fleets surrounded the island, and threatened any Soviet ships that tried to get to Cuba. An agreement was eventually made where the US wouldn't attack Cuba and the Soviets would stop supplying Cuba with missiles.
