During a Mars opposition, Schiaparelli draws a detailed map of Mars' landscape. During the observation, a boy named Joseph Sheldon observed a strange man alone outside of New York City, staring upwards at Mars. According to Sheldon, the man looked at him, whistled an impossibly low note, and walked away. A criminal profile artist drew the man's face according to Sheldon's descriptions of him.
