Coronal Luszoch Vesahliir, the despotic ruler of Aryselmalyr and the Serôs empire, is poisoned by his own senior general and lifelong friend, in order to preserve the empire and peace. Vesahliir is succeeded by his son Esahl, a pacifistic Dukar. Esahl promises reforms in Aryselmalyr and eventually self-governance for the other races.
