The District of Columbia code made it illegal to carry an unauthorized handgun. Dick Anthony Heller applied to get a one-year license for a handgun for his home but was denied. Heller sued Washington DC claiming it took away his Second Amendment rights to not allow him to own a gun.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Heller 5-4 claiming that he has the Second Amendment right to keep a handgun in his home to protect himself. This ruling impacted Gun Laws across the USA and led to other trials such as McDonald vs the City of Chicago
