The first election after the wall street crash showed the political ramifications of the depression. In just under a year employment had already more than doubled up to 3 million.

While the SPD remained the largest party, the Nazi party made huge gains - taking second place in the polls and gaining 95 seats (to a total of 107). The communist party came in third also and so extremism was evidently rising. The public were becoming more politically active too as turnout was an unprecedented 82%.

Brüning (of the Centre party) was selected as Chancellor by president Hindenburg (who took over from Ebert in 1925) but the new extremist Reichstag toppled the carefully balanced coalitions that previous Chancellors had relied upon and so this made his law making almost impossible.
