Although Lincoln dislikes slavery, he did not believe that the federal government had to right./power to abolish slavery where it already existed. He figured that if he could use his power to order union soldiers to take confederate supplies, he could also authorize them to emancipate slaves. Soon after, emancipation was not just a moral issue; it became a weapon of war. And on January 1, 1863, Lincoln came out with his Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation wasn’t able to free slaves immediately because it only applied to areas behind the Confederate lines. The Emancipation Proclamation gave many the view that the war had a moral purpose by turning the struggle of slavery into a fight to free the slaves.
