Christian II of Scandinavia killed Sweden's leading aristocrats and ecclesiastics. He promoted Lutheran Protestantism. His uncle, Frederick I, later imprisoned him, who was also a Protestant. Christian III took the throne after Frederick's death, a dedicated Lutheran.
