A famine came, but the Hebrews found refuge in Egypt, which was made possible by Joseph, son of Jacob and was then a high ranking officer of the Egyptian pharaoh. Upon the death of Joseph, the Hebrews became slaves of the pharaoh. Moses led them out of Egypt back to Canaan.
