Fort Sumter in Charleston is bombarded for 34 hours by Confederate forces after the U.S Army commander failed to evacuate. This leads to the 4 years of conflict and the U.S civil war. On April 14 Fort Sumter was captured when major Robert Anderson turned the fort over to the confederacy.
