General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union general Ulysses S. Grant at the churchouse in appomattox. Grant let all of the Confederates go with most of their belongings except their rifles. When Union soldiers start celebrating their surrender Grant says ¨The war is over, but the rebels are our countrymen again¨.
