Now there are rumors about a mass escape plot, and now the coordinators over the experiment are also assuming roles in the prison that are not their actual roles. A guard overheard a prisoner talk about escaping with prisoner #8612, who was released, due to his mental breakdown, a day before the escape plot, this was not okay for the faculty. He described the reason behind it in an interview after the experiment saying “ and it was the experience of being out of control, both of the situation and of my feelings” (Quiet Rage, 19). Instead of being rational in their actions, they instead thought that foiling the plot was the best way to go. So, Zimbardo was going to take all the prisoners and transport them to a fifth-floor storage area and when the cavalry comes all they will find is an empty floor and Philip in the middle, lying to them that the experiment is over and that there is nothing to save. However, once they leave he will bring back the prisoners and double up security. Turns out the escape plot was a hoax and that all that planning that Zimbardo did was for nothing because he was thinking like a superintendent and not a psychologist. Because of that rumor the prisoners suffered more and more, the guards began to escalate their “level of harassment[by] increasing the humiliation they made the prisoners suffer, forcing them to do menial, repetitive work such as cleaning out toilet bowls with their bare hands” (Zimbardo). This is one of the horrors that helped end the experiment.
