The decision for this case was made on March 6th, 1857. Scott was a slave who moved to illinois, a free state, and claimed that because he resided in a free state he was also a free man. The court decided that Scott was not free and that no person descended from a slave had been considered a citizen. The court also decided that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.
