The Confederacy thought that an invasion would get recognized by foreign countries. So Lee started invading the north and was met by the union at Gettysburg. And they fought for three days, Lee and the Confederacy retreated from battle. Union won this battle. Its significance to the war was that the casualties were so high, the Confederates would nevr try to invade the union territor again.
