Because of the Union naval blockade of the Southern ports, Confederate cotton had to be shipped across the Mississippi River, through Louisiana and Texas and out of Mexico to sell to European markets. Vicksburg, a Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi fell to the Union. The outcome was a Union victory, casualties 19,233 total (10,142 Union; 9,091 CSA). The significance was that this Split the confederacy in half and cut off cotton sales to foreign markets. The tide of war turned to the north and Britain decided not to support the south.
