Government Was Informed When Lusitania Left Here, C. L. Schurz Adds. DEFENDS TORPEDO ATTACK Old Rule of Giving Notice to Captured Ships Now Impracticable, It Is Held.

Carl L. Schurz, son of the late General Carl Schurz, in a statement he gave out yesterday, news of which came to the newspaper offices through the German Information Service, asserted that when the Lusitania sailed from New York a week ago last Saturday on her last voyage, "the German Government was informed that the liner had on board contraband of war."
