At this point, however, the SPLA were scoring major victories against government troops and their proxy militias known as the People Defense Forces (PDF.) While the government remained in control of several key cities and towns across southern Sudan, SPLA forces were seizing large areas outside of the more populated cities and continued to attack transport lines and government forces that moved between cities and bases.
