ר׳ ניסים׳’s work ספר המפתח למען אולי התלמוד (the book of the key to unlocking the Talmud) acts as a cross-reference and identifies the sources for things that the משנה quotes. This work is also a commentary because he discusses the sources when connecting them to the text.

About the Author: רבינו ניסים lived from 990 - 1062. He studied at the Kairouan ישיבה and eventually became the ראש ישיבה. He is closely associated with רבינו חננאל, and together they taught the רי׳׳ף.
