While the battle rages on, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon confronts Darth Maul, Darth Sidious' apprentice, in a duel. Qui-Gon is killed but Obi-Wan manages to cut Maul in half. Maul survives through pure hatred of the Jedi, which fuels his connection to the Dark Side.
