After the Panic of 1893, the Pullman Palace Car Company, a railroad car manufacturer, lowered already low wages. This prompted a strike among workers because their rent and other charges to live in the comapny town were not lowered. The unaffordable expenses resulted in many families being close to starvation. Eugene Debs, a socialist leader, led the Pullman Strike. When the strike interferred woth the Us Postal Service deliveries, President Grover Cleveland ordered federal troops to put down the protests. Debs was imprisoned and no changes were made, frustrating labor unions nationwide.
