maire and ada are consoling neslin and tending to her foot. they've brought sika, who, in turn, has brought kano, who is being very awkward around her
kano makes an off comment about being there at the ballet, and maire asks him why
this is when she first starts lowkey suspecting him
sika also pulls them aside afterwards and tells them that he's only just begun his autopsy of georges bofort, but mackinkle's eyes showed signs of having been strangled before being bludgeoned, and judging from georges's outward appearance, he has marks on his arms from hands where he was held and then pushed
he also tells them to try looking for the rest of the stag so he can check it out, too
after they leave, maire bumps into ida, who's been looking for her bc she's got an idea about fran dorley
they go to see her, and ida gives her a pen in her hand and holds a journal up in front of her, and she starts writing something down
turns out, it's some weird ass language
ida asks her what kind of a language she thinks it is, maire says she has no idea, but there's only one place she can think of to find answers
so she goes to see charlie again that evening
it's just after dusk, so they're in the middle of dinner
sika's the one to open the door, he's all 'what're u doing here', she says she needs to see charlie
she asks if he recognises the language, and he says that he doesn't, but he's seen it before
sika and maia are both being very tense about it, maire asks where he's seen it, charlie says in sika's books
so sika sighs and shows her an old book of spells
maia explains that it's the bachalov grimoire and it was written over centuries in old morovan, but that the final few entrances were written by a young witch named lyssie bachalov, who at some point started writing it in that strange language
maia's all strained while talking about it, with good reason, though maire doesn't know that yet
so now there's witchcraft involved, fun
maire asks charlie if she's ever heard of the five women, he says that he's not sure
she looks up the drawing of the blank-faced woman and asks about her, why her face is blank
charlie says that when he dreamt of her, it was like he was seeing her through a veil and he couldn't see her face properly
this is bc isa overdosed all of them with shade, but charlie doesn't know that, he just thinks his mom is kinda distant, not that she's a psychopath
maia says she's always suspected there was something off about the women, and maire asks if she gets a sample from one of them, if maia will be able to tell smth about it
maia says maybe, but it'll have to be somewhat recent, like, not ten years ago or anything, preferable within the last year, in fact
maire is all 'i've got just the person'
