people are given the day off, including maire, and once she's done her (and ada's) one good thing, she goes to see kano
they meet in old church, she asks him if he's heard, he says that everyone's heard
he also tells her that the fox and his followers have already started using it to their advantage, spreading propaganda and fear throughout the ward
kano asks her about lord winsborough, if she knows anything about that and if she thinks it has smth to do with this thing
he looks all suspicious
maire tells him that she knows how he died
she's never been able to lie to him, of all people
he asks her what she's gonna do now, and, thinking about what charlie said, asks him to come with her to see someone
turns out, they're going to the university to talk to sika
while there, kano pulls out some of his medical knowledge that he's acquired
(sidenote, all this time, the fog has gotten thicker and more and more people are going missing, and now people are suspecting that any of them might turn up like kano's master)
anyways, they're introduced to sika, maire tells him that charlie sent her, he smiles at her and wipes his hands clean and stuff
she asks what he's found out about the body
sika says that it's been mauled by something big and strong, that the cuts are deep and likely from an animal with long claws
maire, hesitant, asks if a wolf could have done it
sika says that it would have had to be an unusually big wolf, but that it's possible
sika then cuts into the body and weighs his organs
he says that he wasn't exactly the picture of health
kano is looking on with his arms crossed and an indecipherable look on his face
he really hated that man
he then asks about the deep, even cut on the heart, says that it looks more like a knife wound than claw marks
both sika and maire stare at him in surprise
kano shrugs and says he's from high ward, he's seen some things
sika agrees that it looks like a stab wound, and that it's bleeding some sort of strange black liquid, but that it could just be from the horrible state his organs are in (he's thousands of years old, but he can't know everything about anatomy, it's still the fake!1700s)
they move on to his skull, which has been cracked, and his eyes have broken blood vessels, indicating that he was strangled before his death
there are also bruises on his neck and chest when the blood is wiped off
in conclusion, he was absolutely mauled by something with claws, but before that, he was strangled, beaten, and stabbed in the heart
they finish up, kano asks if she'll be going to the carnival
she says yes, and they kinda sorta agree to see each other there
the chapter ends and starts later that night

maire is getting ready to leave when ada finds her, neslin in tow
she asks her where she's going, maire answers truthfully, and ada begs to go
maire is reluctant, but agrees
they meet up with kano, who's suprised, but doesn't comment on the two strange girls
they go around to different booths
maire accidentally bumps into cade, who's very rude about it, but cyd is there and calms him down
it's a bit odd for a moment, but then cyd offers them all a free session as compensation
there's some sexual tension between her and neslin
now, cyd is a prophet, not a seer, so she sees broader things, where charlie sees small events
so cyd knows that she's probably gonna end up with neslin, and she also knows what maire and kano's bickering will lead to, so she's amused
kano goes first, and he's shaken when he comes out, bc cyd asked about his family and the fire, she asks about the scar on his wrist and on his back, and she tells him that he will see his family again, which is terrifying to him, bc they're all dead
then it's ada, cyd talks about her mother and her brothers, about finding out who she is and who she's supposed to be, and she tells her that she can be brave and stuff
then it's maire's turn, cyd says that she's seen the boy in the tower and the raven atop the throne (vorr is associated with ravens). she sees maire in a white dress (her coronation dress), lying in a field of flowers, and it starts raining blood
the flowers bleed away and grow back as thistles and maire's white dress turns red (her miscarriages)
maire is thoroughly freaked out and pulls away
they're both silent for a minute, maire breathing heavily
finally, cyd tells her that 'he will die for u. u and the brothers/boys/boy'
maire spends the next several years wondering what the fuck that means, until james sacrifices himself for her and their sons
maire leaves the tens, they watch the fireworks, then go back home, freaked the fuck out
