The Moscow Trials begin, the first taking place between August 19 to August 24, 1936. 16 men were held on trial for being part of a terror organization that wanted to kill Joseph Stalin and other members of government. Defendent Ivan Smirnov was accused of being the leader of the organization despite being imprisoned since 1933. Another defendent, Eduard Holtzman, was accused of conspiring with Trotsky in the Hotel Bristol in Copenhagen back in 1932. The Hotel Bristol was demolished in 1917. All defendents were shot in the cellars of Lubyanka prison in Moscow.
