He left Brooklyn daily Eagle to become an editor of the New Orleans Cresent. It was in New Orleans that discovered slavery markets in that city. He founded a “free soil” newspaper, the Brooklyn Freeman, and continued to develop poetry that later impressed Ralph Waldo Emerson.
