In September 1996, the Islamist movement, the Taliban, siezed the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, and rise to power by promising peace for the citizens of Afghanistan. At the beginning of their rule, most Afghan were approving of the Taliban wanting to uphold traditional Islamic values otherwise known as Sharia Law. The Afghan people were supportive of the Taliban as they cracked down on crime and outlawed the growing of poppy seeds to oppose the opium trade. Though there was some uproar when they started to ban the education and employment of women. The Taliban enforced their Sharia Law by holding public executions and amputations to keep people in check. As time went on, the Taliban began losing the support of the Afghan people and many Afghans took refuge in neighboring country Pakistan to escape the Taliban’s authoritative rule. Many nations refused to recognize the Taliban’s authority including the United States, and labeled them as a terrorist organization.

The Taliban created an environment where the people of Afghanistan felt unsafe to the point of having to seek refuge in another country. The Taliban taking over Afghanistan impacted the world immensely as they created a war-filled country. With the event of them taking over Afghanistan and later Pakistan, they started to change those country’s societies and culture. They imposed strict laws and punishments creating fear and misogyny in these communities. Many countries saw the Taliban as a threat such as the United States and brought in troops to fight against them to stop their authoritative rule. They were violating numerous human rights laws with their interpretation of Sharia Law causing the United Nations to intervene. Along with their human rights violations, they were also suppressing women’s rights causing many women’s rights activists to speak out against them and demand for change.
