1 янв 1819 г. - Main Ioway settlements

Описание:

Largest settlement of Ioway located on Des Moines River 30 mi sw of CCCC until 1819:

The main population center of the Ioway up until about 1820 was by the Des Moines River where Selma is now, about 30 miles southwest of Camp. There were 800 to 1,200 people living there around the turn of the 18th century, governed by Chief Mahaska for a number of years. Another major settlement from that time was 30 miles in the opposite direction from Camp, along the Iowa River. While the CCCC property and most of the surrounding area was principally Sauk and Meskwaki territory at the time American pioneers arrived in the 1830’s, as well as much of the preceding century, the Ioway people remained in Iowa up until the same time that all of the other Native American groups were replaced by White settlers. During that last century in Iowa, however, they were restricted to the Des Moines River and Iowa River settlements by the influx of Sauk, Meskwaki, and other Native American groups fleeing French and Anglo expansion in the East.
