Sputnik was the first man-made object in space marking an important moment in human history. Sputnik shattered the American idea that the USSR was technologically inferior, so the United States, not wanting to be outdone, created NASA to compete with the USSR's Roscosmos and the space race officially began. The CIA had fears that Sputnik could be used to monitor the US far from where the US could interfere and this began a new era in military warfare. Although Sputnik did not last for long, its legacy as the first man-made object in space paved the way for more daring endeavors into the final frontier.
