After overthrowing the corrupt and hated former leader President Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro became the leader of Cuba and set out to turn Cuba into a communist country with the ruling political party being the Communist Party of Cuba. Castro's reign was characterized by repression and control similar to that of the USSR, the PROC, North Vietnam, and North Korea. Castro's overthrow of the government was a big red flag for the western allies, especially the US because they supported Batista and now Castro incited anti-American sentiments with the military backing of the USSR. This fear was justified as the Cuban Missile Crisis almost started a third world war.
