The first Strategic Arms Limitation Talks agreement was reached after years of discussion from 1969 to 1972. Essentially, it forced both sides to reduce their military strength by reducing all kinds of missiles, protected bases, weapons testing, and more. The main goal was to stop both sides from constantly trying to one-up each other in weapon advancements with each being more destructive than the last one. Both SALTs would be crucial in Detente and the de-escalation of Cold War tensions.
