Andrew Johnson fired Edwin M. Stanton, an appointee of Abraham Lincoln’s serving as secretary of war, and replaced him with Lorenzo Thomas in early 1868. Many of the articles of impeachment that followed cited Johnson’s violation of the Tenure of Office Act of 1867.
