Chairman Mao Zedong officially establishes the People's Republic of China under the rule of the Communist Party, the CCP. Tensions rose in the West as the USSR now had a strong ally and was no longer alone. On top of that, there were fears that the "Domino Effect" would cause more Asian countries to fall to Communism as China did. After seizing power, Mao instituted very similar domestic policies to the USSR like the Great Leap Forward which bore much resemblance to the USSR's 5-year plan. At the end of his reign, Mao largely changed agrarian China into an industrial powerhouse at the cost of being the dictator with the highest kill count in world history.
