The Democrats got power in all federal states except South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, and all federal troops had been withdrawn from these states. Republicans nominated Rutherford B. Hayes and the Democrats nominated Samuel J. Tilden. Democrats won in the popular vote and expected Tilden in the White House, but he needed only one electoral vote from one of the three southern states. An electoral commission was made to see who was entitled to the votes and the commission gave all the votes to Hayes. Democrats were mad and wanted to filibuster the results and they wanted to send the election to the House of Representatives, which was controlled by them.
