29 янв 1850 г. - Compromise of 1850
Описание:
After the population increase in California, caused by the gold rush, the state drafted a constitution for themselves; this constitution banned slavery in their state. Southern slaveholder President Taylor approved of admitting California and New México into the Union as free states, but southern radicals who disagreed with Taylor’s plan began to speak of secession from the Union. In response to this crisis, Henry Clay proposed the Compromise of 1850, which consisted of the following points:
-California would be admitted to the Union as a free state
-Adopt and enforce the Fugitive Slave Law
-Permit slaveholders to continue holding as they did previously in the District of Columbia, but banish slave-trading completely
-Divide the leftover territory from the Mexican Cession into two (New México and Utah) and allow the settlers inhabiting the territory to decide on the slavery topic by popular sovereignty
-The government will assume Texas’ debt of $10 million in exchange for giving the disputed land between Texas and New México to new territories
The Compromise was fought for by both Henry Clay and Daniel Webster and argued against by John C. Calhoun. The Compromise was later passed, California was admitted to the Union as a free state, the political power of the North was strengthened and multiple parts of the compromise were the cause of controversy.
