While President Pierce failed to obtain Cuba, he managed to add a strip of land for a railroad to the Southwestern American territory. Mexico decided in 1853 to sell the United States thousands of acres of desert land for 10 million. The land today forms the southwestern states of New Mexico and Arizona.
