This Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery everywhere in the United States. Many African Americans celebrated openly once they were finally, legally free. However, when not in the presence of Union soldiers angry white southerners punished them severely for showing their joy by whipping and shooting many African Americans.

Despite white resentment, African Americans pursued emancipation by moving and getting married and attending school. African Americans built their own churches, civic associations, and held political meetings. Freed slaves searched to reunite with family members, sought to legalize their marriages, and they learned to read and write. Churches were the main gathering and were used not just for services, but also for dances, wedding, festivals and for political organizing. This tradition political organizing and African American churches would carry forward right through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
