Although the U.S. developed an imperialistic and aggressively interventionist foreign policy in Latin America and Asia, the U.S. maintained a foreign policy of neutrally when it came to Europe. However, the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram forced the U.S. declared war on April 2, 1917. Therefore, the U.S. abandoned its policy of neutrality toward Europe and actively fought against European central power nations.
