The party was founded in Wisconsin as a reaction to the Kansas Nebraska Act. They wanted to prevent the spread of slavery to the new territories. They wanted to repeal the Kansas Nebraska Act and the Fugitive Slave law. It would become the second largest party and it alienated the south since it was a Northern Party and it would become the Second Largest Party.
