On the 9th of January 1992, the pair announced the discovery of two exoplanets orbiting a pulsar. Their discovery was not the first of its kind, but the one which was most definitive and the most solid, with follow-up observations solidifying the results.

I mean, what doesn't this open up? Life on other planets, planets that are habitable enough for us to get there and terraform, planets with unfathomable amounts of resources like coal and diamonds; exoplanets are vastly important, and their discovery opened up a modern era of exoplanetary discovery.
