This was a saying that arose during President Polk's presidency and referred to the United State's God given right to expand its borders. This ideology along with the Monroe Doctrine shifted U.S. foreign policy to a willingness to militarily challenge and confront other nations and even initiate wars with other nations. For example, the U.S. initiated the Mexican-American War of 1846 through 1848, through which the U.S. acquired California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Texas.
