Mel Luthy is appointed to be the first director. At first, the CLS is more of a virtual center with no designated funds or budget.
Initial CLS mission: “To use every appropriate means to maximize the benefits to students and the Church that come from the linguistic expertise of BYU and its associations. The Center is devoted to fostering excellence in language teaching, linguistic research, and cross-cultural understanding to help students enjoy life, do their professional work well, and prepare for effective Church service.”
Mel Luthy: “Its mission is to help BYU achieve its full potential as a superb language and linguistic center, to give added expertise to graduates in any field and to bring the blessings of the Gospel to the peoples of the world.”
First-year challenges:
• Publicizing offerings of the Center to persons who could benefit from them
• Recruiting qualified teachers
• Increasing collaboration among college faculty
First-year achievements:
• CLS institutes a colloquium series to allow faculty and students to share the results of their research
• CLS assumes administrative responsibility for the Language Acquisition MA
• CLS establishes a webpage and receives 174 emails and numerous phone calls/visits from people expressing interest in either studying or teaching one of the languages offered by CLS.
