1 янв 1886 г. - Haymarket Riot
Описание:
The Knights of Labor joined in a nationwide strike to press for an eight hour workday. In Chicago, for months prior to this general strike, the McCormick Harvester plant was involved in violent strikes over wages and work conditions. Police killed 2 strikers and anarchists called for a rally in Haymarket Square. Although this rally started out as a peaceful gathering in which people listened to speeches , the police eventually moved in to break it up and violence erupted. A bomb was set off, and seven policemen and four protesters were killed. The leaders of the Knights of Labor denounced the bombing and the violence, but the violence harmed the movement significantly. The significance of this event is that it caused the membership rolls of the Knights to decrease dramatically and it ultimately dissolved.
