Canada first joined the British commonwealth in 1931. The modern commonwealth came into existence in 1949. Canada has played a great role in its evolution. The goal of the commonwealth is to accompany the needs of the governments and citizens members in political, social and economic development. The relationship between Canada and Britain remained towards the same goal. However, The United states rose up with the economic and military affairs which meant that affairs with Britain were coming to a weaker relation. Canada was importing more from the US and was exporting more to Britain, while Britain was exporting less to Canada. When after WWII, new independent countries were applying to be a part of the Commonwealth but since these nations were mostly republics such as India, an issue was raised as to whether a republic should be part of this association. Which led to the Commonwealth being seen as an association that might bridge the differences of ethnicity and culture in freedom. Canada played the role of intermediary between the old and new members of the Commonwealth as it was agreed it was agreed among the members to allow republics to be part of the commonwealth only if they accept the sovereign as the head. Canada is an active member in the Commonwealth and is also the second largest contributor to the Commonwealth financially.
