The legislative assembly of Alberta passed the provincial sexual sterilization Act in March 1928. The act authorizes the sexual sterilization and specifies the conditions, methods and procedure. The law was the first Eugenic law which was focused towards the individual living in designated state institutions. The legislation has 4 substantives. One: it created a board and the board made decisions for the candidates. Two: specify the candidate. Three: Outlines the conditions. And Four: No surgeon or doctor must be held accountable for any criminal liability. Around 4800 people were proposed for this act and 99% were approved. The act was set to make sure to protect the gene pool and allowed for sterilization of mentally disabled people in order to prevent the transmission of traits to offspring deemed undesirable. The impact it left was that a lot of people tried out the law but overtime many people did not give their consent. Since the 1930s The indigenous population have been targeted by The sexual sterilization legislation. The start of the sterilization program, Eastern Europeans were the most affected group by the legislation.Under the mental health campaigns in the province a lot of Eastern Europeans were institutionalized and subjected to the sexual sterilization Act. The First Nations and metis people were the 25% of those who were sterilized under Alberta sexual sterilization legislation.
