As summer came early that year, people began to swim in the river that was used for washing, cooking, and drinking. A typhoid outbreak began in Tongkou. The Lu family retreated from village life and shut its doors. Lily's sister-in-law's son showed symptoms so Lily took her children into her sleeping chambers and forbid them from leaving. Lily was very careful when she left to dump the chamber pot, making sure nothing touched her body or clothes. In the end, Lily's mother-in-law, her father-in-law's concubines, third brother-in-law and his family, and her own parents died too. With her mother-in-law gone, Lily was now Lady Lu and held immense power in the Lu household.
