Description: Leon Focault matched the lines produced by a sodium lamp with some of the dark lines in a solar spectrum in 1849.

Design/technology significance: More of an expansion of Fraunhofer lines, and how they could be studied, more or less manipulated.

Impact on Earth/People: Leon’s discoveries lead to the further exploration and findings by Gustav Kirchoff and Robert Bunsen.
