In 1980, two years after first visiting Houston and getting a chance to introduce himself to his father, Conrad Murray returned to Texas to enroll at Texas Southern University, where in just three years he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in pre-medicine and biological sciences. From there, Murray followed in his father's footsteps and attended the primarily African American Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

P. 43 Murray book: "When I returned for my full time studies in the spring of 1980, I initially stayed at a downtown Holiday Inn, for about five days. When I got in touch with my father to ask about guidance on where to live, my dad said his house was large and I could stay in a spare guest bedroom. […] After two semesters had passed, I’d spent just about the entire first year of university at my father’s home. Naomi my stepmother furnished a one-bedroom apartment in one of his 26-unit complex, "Schroeder Square Apartments." I would relocate there for the rest of my college years in Houston. I volunteered as manager for the complex, in addition to keeping up the appearance of the grounds and premises in lieu of paying one half of the monthly rent. I was not paid an income.
