Paper was invented by a eunuch named Cai Lun in 105 AD. His process for making it involved taking bamboo, hemp waste, old rags, fishnets and bark from mulberry trees, and boiling them in a pulp that was beaten with a wood or stone mallet and then mixed with a large amount of water. The resulting composition was then dunked with wooden sieves and the excess water was removed, leaving the paper finished after drying.

Before the invention of Paper, bamboo, silk, and cloth were used for writing.
