2. This was the 19th presidential election and in a four way contest, Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin won the election

3. With the Democratic loss being very evident the South saw this as a direct threat to the Southern economy. Since a Republican won presidency the South believed that they had lost their power and seccession was inevitable.
